October 19, 2024I've been a hardcore Motorola user for over a decade now and I thought nothing could get me away from it. They're always releasing newer and better products that work great and don't break the bank. After 4 yrs with the Moto One 5G,i became interested in the foldable market, getting more, paying more, best of both worlds.
I did my research on Samsung, Google, Honor, and Motorola; I even toyed with the idea of the Windows Duo (not really). I discovered Samsung, try as they might, keep churning out heavily skinned products that don't offer anything more than the novelty of folding screens with monstrous creases. Google was somewhat better, more pure, but didn't feel like a phone closed. Honor magic V2 was sleek and thin, packed with features, but lacked the camera quality and serviceability in this country. Which leads me to the OnePlus Open,a company that set out to make a folding phone and got it right the first time. Amazing screens, incredible optics, feature rich with multitasking support. It makes full use of it's beautiful 7.82" screen, with a barely there crease, I might add. It feels like a regular phone when closed and it's about the same weight as my previous phone (+30gr) only shorter so it doesn't dig into my hip when sitting with it in the front pocket. The phone is made with premium materials and it shows, reminds me of a Vertu. It also comes baked with high end security and encryption (Apex version is a fortress). The only downside for me was microsd compatibility for expansion and ease of transferring media, the OTG helps in that regard.
I could keep going, though you get the picture. You won't regret this foldable unless you want the newest and fastest, in which case, I'd wait a few months for the Open 2.

February 16, 2024This phone is my 1st fold I have ever purchased. I've waited many years to finally purchase one once I saw one with a better outer screen and a way better inner screen. This phone feels better in my hands and for front screen use better than the fold 4 or the pixel fold felt like. Software is perfect for what I need and it can multitasks very well using 3 apps at once. Battery life is excellent lasting me about 6 to 8 hours of screen time each day and I use the inner screen quite a bit at full brightness. Connection to cellular, wifi, and Bluetooth have been seamless and always there when I need it. I am wary on inner screen losing pixels since I have seen many people having the issue of the screen having dead pixels and having to be repaired. If I do have to get the inner screen repaired then rating may go down. For now though, it's way better and more smooth than any other foldable phone I've ever felt. Can't even see the folded area of the screen unless you're looking for it with the screen off. Camera, my lord, is best of the best. They did very good partnering up with Hassalbland. Comes with a case, super fast charging 67 watt brick, cord, and already placed screen protectors on both screens. Samsung, Google, Apple, take some notes. Overall, I'm really enjoying this device and hope to continue using it without any issues!

July 4, 2024This is not only the best foldable on our market, but it's the best phone I've ever owned, period! Everything about the OnePlus Open is excellent. What a top-notch, quality phone!
Performance: OnePlus' skin over Android is fantastic. It's smooth, fast and the performance is excellent. There are enough "bells and whistles" to keep you happy, interested and entertained (but not too many like Samsung). The Open has been super reliable, as well. I'm thoroughly impressed!
Displays: Both displays on the Open are fantastic! They're bright, beautiful, smooth, responsive, colorful (but not too much like Samsung), and they're a pleasure to view and use. The two main reasons I was drawn to the Open over my Samsung Fold were: 1) the cover display is the size of a regular smartphone and let's you use it as - wait for it- a regular smartphone without the awkwardness of having it the screen be too narrow (like Samsung's); and 2) the crease of the main display when unfolded is barely noticeable (very much unlike the Samsung). What a remarkable engineering feat!
Cameras: IMO, these are the best cameras I have ever used on a smartphone! I love photography and camera quality is super important to me. OnePlus NAILED it with this camera system - especially with the telephoto lens. I own a Canon Point-and-Shoot camera that I carry around with me should my phone not be up to snuff for my photography needs. I no longer have to do this with my OnePlus Open and I have permanently put my point and shoot camera away. The Open's camera is literally better than my point-and-shoot! You won't be disappointed with these cameras, either! (Don't expect the over-processed look of Samsung phones, though. But, if you like that style, then you can always edit the photos to make em look all digital, saturated and fake.)
Sound/speakers: The Open has 3 speakers - not just two. It's not the loudest phone out there, however, the sound that comes out of it is high-quality. It doesn't produce that tinny, annoying, smartphone speaker sound that irritates you, especially if it's at a too-high volume setting. The sound is pretty nuanced, actually, with a good balance. Also, the speakerphone is sufficiently loud and clear.
Connection: the connection with WiFi and Data networks is supremely reliable and strong. Bluetooth connection is super fast and stable as well.
Quality/Construction/Reliability: The level of quality of the OnePlus Open is high and impressive! This phone feels sturdy and made to a high standard. It doesn't flex, feels solid and doesn't have any disconcerting creaks and sounds like my old Samsung Fold had. This is a premium phone - make no mistake about that! Another thing I really love on this phone is its haptic feedback. Small thing, but it is on-point! Also, it has been the most reliable phone I've ever had, so far.
This is my first OnePlus and to say I am thoroughly impressed would be a gross understatement! (Pay no attention to "professional reviewers" who only push and promote Apple products, like The Verge. 3 stars? Please. This phone deserves a full 5 stars and is better than any iPhone I've ever used. The Verge blindly gives anything Apple makes 4.5 stars and above. Pay to Play, anyone?)

March 13, 2024I have been repping the Oneplus open for a couple of months now, and this review is meant to shine a light on my experiences with the company and the phone itself. I was truly excited to see this device when it came out, since i had the Galaxy fold 3 I was more than thrilled to see that Oneplus had come to town with their shiny new (big cameraed) version. I just had to get one for myself and see how it preformed, and man can it preform, but behind this amazing device is a not so amazing support team for it. Follow me through this review of my experiences and I’ll shine some light on the good things and some not-so-good things I endured through my ownership of this device. We’ll first get into the nitty gritty about the device itself and then move onto the company and problems I’ve had along the way.
The very first thing I have to say is man this device can perform. It’s such an amazing phone and I definitely didn’t expect this much honestly. Both screens are bright, bold and beautiful (2800 nits max brightness in HDR mode! Wow!) With the inside display not showing the crease whatsoever. I was quite pleasantly surprised when I found that the phone folds out nearly 180 degrees I think infact its around 2 degrees off of that. It also shuts completely closed with no gap, wow! Also the outer display isn’t just meh. It’s amazing! It honestly could be just fine if it couldn’t fold open anymore that’s how good it is. I can’t say the same for samsungs offerings because that outer display is kind of atrocious to use because of how skinny and tall it is. The Open is a wider shorter profile, as well as the phone being thinner than the samsung that its more bearable to use closed. Moving on to battery life, I am truly impressed on how this foldable handles. With it’s 4805 mAh battery it gets me through a day easily doing anything I want; Gps, gaming, photography, it doesn’t matter. I even usually unplug it the night before when it’s fully charged, (which only takes around an hour from 0 to 100 with the included charger by the way). Lastly this thing can PERFORM with its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. It may not be the latest chipset but it’s very well optimized here. With the multitasking that this phone is able to do it’s a real workhorse of a device. You can run 4 different apps at the same time (if the apps will let you) flawlessly shifting through them and running them like normal. You can even do this thing where you pinch 4 fingers together on the display to show all the apps at once. There’s even a little hotbar at the bottom to show you a folder that has all the apps your using so if you accidentally leave the split screen mode you can just jump right back into it. Now moving into the camera. I won’t be the first or last person to say this. The camera hump is ginormous, it’s the first thing you notice, and depending on the person you’ll either think it’s beautiful, like I do, or not. Camera bump aside it’s rocking 3 cameras on the back a 48MP Sony LYTIA-T808 sensor (1/1.43”, f/1.7) (OIS), 48MP Ultra-Wide lens (1/2”, f/2.2) and a 64MP Telephoto (OIS), 3X optical (145mm, f/2.6) so seeing through the mumbo-jumbo there’s the standard, telephoto, and ultrawide. A trifecta, in that if you’re a photographer would be very useful. They’re also branded by Hasselblad, but do with that information what you will. From a photographers standpoint they render photos very nicely they’re sharp and they have true-to-life colors, probably the best foldable phone camera I have ever laid my eyes on. The last cool little gizmo I wanted to mention, is the IR blaster, the device that lets you remote control essentially any TV you want if you set it up to that. It’s something not very common nowadays that is just really neat to see here.
Now we move into the reasons I’m honestly let down by the phone and company themselves. Stick with me this is a bit of a long story. I bought my phone back at the end of December from bestbuy because I have one up where I live and they were offering one. I do have to say this is an expensive phone and I got it on a deal and paid full price around $1600 for it. You might be reading this review and saying “Duh, what did you expect it’s a foldable phone it’s going to be expensive.” Well yes but here’s the issues I have with pricetag they put on it. First off they make you feel like you just got into an exclusive “Red Card Member Club” where you get Redcoins as a way of discounts, only to their store of course, and you redeem a bunch of coupons that they have in there like free shipping on any purchase from their website, and 20% off and so on and so forth. Classic company trying to get you to buy more stuff. One of the things in there that was a little irritating is they give you a coupon for the Oneplus 12! Like really? 1600 on a foldable phone wasn’t enough? They also make you think you have all of these support options if something goes wrong, which trust me you don’t more on that in a second. Anyway yes they give you all these things to try and upsell you even more though you just bought their most expensive phone. Moving on to the support, or kind of support. I was a month into owning my phone, I received it January 2nd, It was now February 6th at around 7pm my Fiancee had told me dinner was done, whilst I was playing a game on my phone. She had told me to get my food, so I shut my phone put it on the side table and got up to get food. When I came back I opened my phone back up the play more games, when I noticed a small red dot super bright on the top of the foldable display. I initially though it was spit so I went to rub it away and a bright white line shot across my screen. My heart sank and I looked at the display in awe. I angled the phone in the light to see if the display was torn away or something and noticed a bulge coming from inside, something broke in the hinge? Already? I thought it was rated for 1,000,000 folds. At this time I came from a severely broken pixel so I didn’t really have anything to go back to. I contacted Oneplus right away, but the website would’nt let me make a repair claim so I went on their website and spoke to someone to get a claim number and shipping label. They promised me it would take 9-10 business day. I thought that’s not so bad I’ll just be without a phone for 2 weeks oh well, what’s 2 weeks I went without for 7 in basic training. I sent the phone in the next day on a Friday. So I waited and checked the website religiously for the next week, they said they inspected it, so what? All I have to wait for is them to fix it right? That should be pretty quick! Well unfortunately to my surprise it wasn’t. I waited another week, then another, and no updates, so I reached out to Oneplus support asking what was going on, and why haven’t I been updated. They seemed also a little perplexed and escalated my case and told me to wait 1-3 business days. So I breathed a sigh of despair and waited and waited. Wait 5 days have gone by? And I haven’t heard from the escalation? So I contacted again only to be met with them saying it’s already been escalated please wait 1-3 business days. This is when I start getting upset. I paid 1600 for a phone and support has already taken 14 business days! When they told me 9-10. I finally get an email from escalation only for them to tell me that they will look into it and to give them another 1-3 business days. I thought thats what the other business days were for! I waited another 4 business days when I connected them and asked for a refund or replacement instead as it would be faster and didn’t have a phone. They never said no to it but only asked for my “precious time and patience.” Believe it or not I waited another 2 weeks going back and forth with support learning nothing about my expensive phone. Only to get a reply one days that the repair center didn’t have the parts to repair my device and that “It would have been a simple fix if they had the parts.” Well why wasn’t I told that? I actually found it out on REDDIT of all places before they told me. I finally got sick of waiting and asked my friend if i could borrow a phone to tide me over as I’m a postal carrier and need it to be able to contact the office or vice versa. The day I pick up the phone (March 6th) I finally get an email that my phone has been repaired and being shipped back. Hallelujah I thought to myself. The tracking said I was to receive it March 11th. Well March 11th comes and luckily so does my phone. I’m so happy I could almost cry, almost. I open the package to look at my phone and I’m inspecting it to see if the problem was fixed which it was and I flip the phone over excited to see the camera again and to my…. Disappointment, I see that there’s dust in my camera lens. Really? After all that time.
There’s dust in the camera lens. I contacted Oneplus straight away again hoping they could remedy the situation somehow. Of course I get the escalation 1-3 business days only this time I get an email yesterday as a matter of fact saying that “If the dust is on the outside dust it off.” Wow wish I would have though of that one. Or “If it’s inside send it in for another repair.” and lose another month? No thanks. After all this time i still received my product with a defect in it. Do better Oneplus. This has been an awful experience and this is my warning to everyone reading this, If you get this phone have another just in case something happens to it. I get it foldable phones are rather new and we haven’t quite worked the kinks out but behind this awesome, beautifully crafted device is a terrible customer service and terrible policy of refund or replacement, I wish this could be remedied honestly but we shall see. Thank you for hanging in there if you did. I’ll update this post as the saga continues to see if they find a way to fix this situation.
